For many organizations, digital accessibility has long been viewed as a compliance requirement that could be addressed later. It often falls into the category of important-but-not-urgent initiatives. Maybe even a project owned by legal, web or IT teams rather than executive leadership.

That mindset is becoming increasingly risky.

As organizations continue to accumulate digital content, accessibility is evolving from a technical obligation into a broader business, operational and reputational concern. But there is another reason leaders should be paying attention: Accessibility often reveals a deeper issue hiding in plain sight.

Many organizations don’t fully understand, govern or manage the content they have created over years of digital growth. PDFs, reports, forms, manuals, policies, training materials and customer communications contain some of an organization’s most valuable institutional knowledge. Yet, these assets are often scattered across repositories, difficult to search, inconsistently maintained and inaccessible to portions of the workforce and public.
